Everything You Need to Know About Our Ascots – Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ascot?

An ascot is a classic neckerchief for competitive riding and is worn under the competition jacket. It gives the competition outfit an elegant look and is part of traditional competition attire in many disciplines.

Why do many female riders today opt for a pre-folded ascot?

Before a dressage competition, every minute often counts. A pre-folded ascot saves time when getting dressed and ensures that it fits evenly right from the start. Especially in hectic competition situations, it’s convenient when the plastron can be put on quickly without time-consuming folding or tying.

Expert Tip
There’s often very little time before the start. A pre-folded, one-piece ascot can be put on in just a few seconds and fits evenly right away. This ensures a relaxed start to the tournament day.
What are the advantages of a one-piece ascot?

A one-piece ascot fits particularly evenly and is less likely to slip than multi-piece versions. Since the pleats are already set, it always looks neat and polished—without any additional draping or adjustments.

Why does AIKO use a medium-weight satin?

The fabric weight influences both the look and the comfort. A medium-weight satin drapes beautifully, feels comfortable against the body, and retains its shape even while riding. At the same time, the fabric impresses with its subtle, silky sheen.

Material Information
Medium-weight satin combines elegance with functionality. It has a high-quality look, flutters significantly less while riding than very lightweight fabrics, and ensures that the ascot looks neat all day long.
Why is the craftsmanship of an ascot so important?

A high-quality material only truly comes into its own through precise craftsmanship. Clean seams, precisely placed pleats, and meticulous tailoring ensure that the ascot fits comfortably and retains its shape even after frequent wear.

Good to Know
With a high-quality ascot, you often don’t notice the quality until you take a second look: even pleats, cleanly finished seams, and a fabric that retains its elegant shape even after many wears.
Can I customize my ascot?

Yes. AIKO offers various customization options. Depending on your preference, the ascot can be adorned with high-quality crystal stones in various colors or complemented with an elegant scattered pattern on the fabric. This creates a design that perfectly matches your tournament outfit.

What are the advantages of a custom-designed ascot?

A personalized ascot adds a personal touch to your competition outfit. Many female riders coordinate the crystal colors with their competition jacket, riding helmet, saddle pad, or other equipment details, creating a harmonious overall look.

Expert Tip
A harmonious competition outfit thrives on the details. When crystal colors and design elements are coordinated, the result is an elegant overall impression—stylish, timeless, and unique.
Can I have the ascot and fly hood designed in the same style?

Yes. At AIKO, the ascot and fly hood can be designed with coordinating crystal colors and designs. This creates a custom set that visually connects the rider and horse and elegantly highlights your personal style.

Why do many riders opt for a coordinated set of a ascot and fly hood?

A harmoniously coordinated competition outfit isn’t limited to the rider’s clothing. When the ascot and fly hood feature the same crystal colors or design elements, they create a cohesive overall look. Such subtle details lend the ensemble a special elegance and reflect the personal style of both rider and horse.

Expert Tip
A competition outfit looks particularly elegant when individual design elements are subtly repeated—such as the crystal colors of the ascot appearing on the fly hood or the horse’s browband. This creates a harmonious look without appearing overdone.
Why does AIKO rely on high-quality crystal elements?

The crystal appliqués are deliberately used as stylish accents. High-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship ensure that the embellishments retain their elegant appearance for a long time, even with regular use and proper care.

How do I properly care for my tournament ascot?

To ensure that the ascot retains its elegant appearance for a long time, we recommend gentle cleaning. Light stains can often be removed with just a little water and a soft cloth. For heavier soiling, the plastron can be washed in a laundry bag on the delicate or gentle cycle of the washing machine. It should then be air-dried.

Expert tip from one rider to another
After a day of competition, the ascot often doesn’t need to go in the washing machine at all. It’s often enough to soak it overnight in lukewarm water in the sink. The next day, gently squeeze out the water, smooth it into shape, and let it air dry. This keeps the satin looking beautiful for a long time, and the ascot is quickly ready to wear again.
Can I wash a ascot with crystal embellishments in the washing machine?

A high-quality ascot with crystal embellishments can be washed on the gentle cycle without any problems, provided you follow the care instructions. We recommend using a laundry bag to provide additional protection for the fabric and embellishments. Avoid using fabric softener and the dryer.

Material Information
Satin usually dries quickly after washing and generally requires little maintenance. If the plastron is smoothed out after washing and air-dried flat or on a hanger, the fabric will retain its beautiful shape for a long time.

For our ascots we use high-quality, silky, shiny satin, which forms nicely and is also sufficiently robust.
All AIKO® satin plastrons are hand washable at 30°C or machine-washed in a pillowcase - no dryer.
